The "Snowball Effect" whitewashed us!
My husband and I are small business owners. We felt the economy turn for the worse in 2007. Everything seemed to start crumbling. We had to choose whether to pay our employees, who had families of their own to feed, or to pay our taxes. We always thought we'd catch up, but with penalties and interest, we were in over our head.

I am writing to let you know how pleased I was with my recent experience with your firm. I originally contacted your company to assist me with my past due federal tax liabilities. Four Year Tax Dilemma

Just a brief note thanking Rob Rush from Sheehan and Associates for helping us to resolve our four year tax dilemma. Prior to meeting with Mr. Rush I had discussed my dilemma with another tax agency and was extremely anxious after leaving that agency. Thought I was meeting with a CPA only to find out that he was a financial accountant that: could not answer all my questions; game me no assurance that my dilemma would be resolved; stated it would cost me several thousands of dollars to resolve; claim to take a couple of years to possibly resolve; and worst of all could not give me a set or approximate amount as to how much the agency services would cost me! Needless to say I left that agency feeling as if my issue would be impossible to resolve.
Searched for another agency and came upon Sheehan and Associates. Within 24 hours of speaking with him over the phone I was able to meet him. I found Mr. Rush to be very clear and concise as to what steps needed to be taken in order to resolve my tax issues as well explained tax laws. I left his office feeling very assured that I had taken the correct steps in taking my case to Sheehan and Associates and that my nightmare would soon be over. Mr. Rush would call and inform me of the status of the case and took the time to call up and follow up on any questions or discuss any incoming mail that I received from the IRS. Robert Rush with Patrick Sheehan and Associates represented Rand’s Hallmark in Tax issues regarding the Internal Revenue Service, Illinois Department of Employment Services, and Illinois Department of Revenue.
Rand’s Hallmark owners Val Rand and Gary Watland became aware of many tax problems after getting a call from other IRS attorney’s that wanted to help us with Tax Liens. Then within several weeks later Harris Bank legal department called to inform us that we had a levy for $264,000 hitting our accounts. Fortunately we had been given a referral by both our corporate attorney and accounting firm that Patrick Sheehan was one of the best with tax issues and we had retained your services one week earlier. The next day he achieved a stay in the levy allowing us to continue business; while Robert helped us prepare for the attack from multiple taxing bodies. Had we not retained Patrick Sheehan and Associates help we would be out of business in July of 2008.
I came on board as an owner of Rand’s Hallmark in December 2005. In June of 2008 the controller that I inherited faked a suicide unsuccessfully and it was discovered that he was conducting fraud by not reporting to the owners since 1995 that he was not paying, paying late or reporting to various taxes and reports due, paying hundreds of thousands in penalties and interest and not reporting this activity on any financial statements to the partners, banks or accountants. The controller had a locked file drawer with unopened tax documents, overdue notices and demand letters going back to 1995. He covered up the activity by over-costing our inventory. We compiled a large document of his activities that helped achieve a $964,000 judgment against the controller, one which he will never be able to pay. Robert used the document to negotiate with the taxing bodies.
Robert, associate of Patrick Sheehan’s office lead us through the uncharted world of tax problems with complete professionalism and thoroughness. He methodically informed us of all potential risk, negotiated a core payback schedule, kept us completely informed of all deadlines, documented the payments were made and properly directed to core debt. He then was able to achieve 100% abatement of penalties and interest with IDES and a significant portion of the penalties and interest with the IRS. While we are still waiting to hear of the resolution of the Illinois Department of Revenue on abatement of penalties and interest for Sales Tax, we are confident that Robert will deliver a good result for Rand’s Hallmark.
We have had our petition in with the State of Illinois since March 2009 waiting for the State to rule. We have had two yearly audits with the state and paid all core debt due from the controller’s underpayment of Sales Tax for a full three years up to the end of the controller’s tenor. The State of Illinois’ debt problems and number of cases waiting to be reviewed is large. Robert accomplished this in a way that allowed us to continue business.
Our problems were a perfect storm; discovering these problems at a time that we entered the worst economic downturn of my 40 years in retail. Yet because of Robert Rush’s guidance we survive to date. While we do still not know if we will survive with double the debt and a lackluster economy, I absolutely know that we would not be in business today without Robert Rush of Patrick T. Sheehan and Associate’s help. I highly recommend their services to all needing their most competent assistance.

Rob Figured Out a Way to Eliminate 70% of the Tax I Thought I Would Have to Pay

I would recommend Rob Rush to represent anybody who finds themselves in an unfortunate situation with the IRS. I owed over $14,000 dollars with no way of paying it back. Worse yet the IRS had frozen my bank account so that I was unable to function. From the time I called until the successful conclusion of my case everything went the way he told me it would. He was able to have the Levy lifted on my bank account and then in addition figured out a way to eliminate roughly 70% of the tax I thought I would have to pay. His communication was excellent every step of the way, he never made promises that couldn’t be kept and he was great to work with.

I Made a Great Choice

Some aspects of running my own company were great. Managing my taxes was not one of them. Slowly my tax debt had grown to a six figure amount. I tried to make heads or tails out of all the paperwork the IRS was constantly sending me and had made some payments but the fines and penalties were growing faster than what I could pay. Eventually, the IRS started levying my business accounts- not just once but several times. They seized personal accounts and threatened to seize my home and even levied my kids’ accounts just because I was listed on the account. That’s when I knew I had to find help.
I had three criteria when I started looking:
1) They had to be reputable
2) Local, within one hour drive from my home
3) I wanted to deal with one person for all issues
I had received plenty of junk mail with offers to eliminate my tax debt. I picked 3 that seemed promising and made phone calls. Only Patrick T. Sheehan & Associates yielded a live person to answer. I made an appointment to meet with Mr. Robert Rush. I was apprehensive at the first meeting, but by the time I left I was confident I had made a great choice. Mr. Rush was very straight forward, non-judgmental and explained exactly what I needed to do. I had to provide a lot of documentation, but they provided a clear list of exactly what was needed. After about a week of my time I had it all together. Subsequent meetings at their office went well. The staff greeted me by name. Meetings were prompt and paperwork was always prepared and ready. In response to your closing letter, I am writing to tell you how grateful I am for the professional manner in which you handled my tax problems.
About a year ago, I was being bomb-barded with letters and phone calls from various firms claiming to solve my tax situation. All of this, of course, caused by the IRS filing a Federal Tax Lien in respect of this liability. The offers were endless and ruthless. I was confused and upset and did not know where to turn.

For more than two years we agonized over a business and personal related tax issue. We started out with hiring an accountant with extensive experience with the IRS. As we were going through the process of understanding our situation and devising a plan – we never reached a level of comfort. We had a good idea on the forms and information needed to fill in the forms; however, the more stressful issue of how to best deal with the IRS never reached an acceptable comfort level. As such, we delayed making decisions.
